Tablet Tumbler, 2014-15

Tablet Tumbler is an umbrella project by Kristin Lucas and Joe McKay. Tumblers are a series of objects to be rolled around the gallery. Each is outfitted with tablets that run a custom app or web page. Audio-visual content (e.g. generative animation, computer vision, or irrational mapping experiment) is responsive to sensors within the tablets.

Tablet Tumbler Movie: installation detail, single channel projection, Annual Showcase, Eyebeam, New York, January 2014; single channel video composites.

A tumbler form doubles as a multiple-camera recording device, utilizing the tablets' built-in cameras. Recordings presented in installation form, as a continuous six-channel rolling point of view video that jump cuts through New York City-area living and work spaces. Participants navigate the tumbler through their own spaces and are given latitude for creative personal expression.

Unlike traditional mapping services, the tumbler records its surroundings through a method of chance operation. It takes no stock in logical pathways, practical outcomes, or completeness.
